Hippie CEO Life #32 - The Importance of Data Literacy
November 18, 2022
“The lack of data literacy has allowed companies, journalists, and politicians to effectively distort data in order to create divisiveness and chaos.”
~ jason thompson, hippie ceo
At 33 Sticks, we have taken on a mission to help bring data literacy to as many people as we can, in order to create a movement of people, businesses, and organizations that are committed to using data to create more good in the world.
Data is everywhere, we are surrounded by it. Everything we interact with, is data.
While it would be true to say that business success is dependent upon developing a basic level of data literacy, i would argue that, more importantly, life success is highly dependent upon developing a basic understanding of data, how it’s used, and how it impacts every single decision that we make.
While we have the amazing opportunity to work with an elite set of businesses in helping their employees develop more advanced analytical skills, we also had a vision of bringing our message to a broader group of people as well — that vision was the seed that was planted that ultimately resulted in the children’s book ‘A is for Analytics’ being published in December 2021.
We need to start thinking about data literacy at a much younger age. As i mentioned in an interview for the website Be Data Lit:
“While we are actively doing a lot of work at the higher education level, we felt education about data needed to start at a much younger age. And so the idea to create a children’s book was born. We believe that if we can get children interested in data and analytics at a very young age, we have the ability to create a new generation of critical thinkers that can help take back our world from all the bad actors who have used data for evil rather than good.”
So if i can make a shameless plug for our book, we truly believe that it’s a great way to get people, from 2 years old to 90 years old, interested in data.
We have worked incredibly hard over the past few months to achieve Amazon Prime status, which means even faster shipping options this holiday season. Plus, we have enabled the Amazon Gift Wrapping option, for those who want to send the book as a gift directly from Amazon to their friends and family.
Let’s commit today to using data to create more good in the world.
