Hippie CEO Life #11 - Analytics Conference in Vegas

June 24, 2022

i spent this week in Las Vegas, attending the Marketing Analytics Summit learning from lots of experts and to support 33 Sticks Principal Architect, Jenn Kunz, who was speaking at the event. i also had the opportunity to hear Wil Reynolds present a keynote session — If you haven’t had the chance to hear him speak you must add this to your list of things to do.

Now i’m in the San Bernardino National Forest recovering from the overstimulation of Vegas - the noise, the lights, the people, drain me. And this morning, as i was sitting in this incredible setting, it struck me how fortunate i am to have the autonomy to do work, to create value, from literally anywhere.

While the world is caught up in the frenzy of remote work, in-office work, or the compromise of hybrid work, my thinking is less about the logistics of where work gets done and more about why people were attracted to remote work in the first place and this may come as a surprise but it’s not about where you work, it’s about HOW YOU WORK.

The reason why remote work attracted so many supporters was that it held the promise of moving us from a world in which work was done in environments in which employees are untrusted and micromanaged to a world in which work is done in environments where employees are trusted and have autonomy.

"It doesn't make sense to hire smart people and tell them what to do; we hire smart people so they can tell us what to do." ~ Steve Jobs

Sitting here in the mountains, being in a place where i can feel creative, drives me to shake up the system, challenge the norms of how work has been done, from one of micromanagement and control to one of trust and autonomy.

I'm not sure how much impact i can have on the world, realistically very little, but that won't stop me from doing everything i can to challenge the system, to create a healthier way of doing work, and to create opportunities for people to live their best lives.
